Simple Observations

In this post, you’ll find a book phrase, a lyric, a picture, and my own thoughts and interpretations of them and life. Followed by a joke, which I hope makes you laugh or at least puts a smile on your face.

A Book – Darkness

“The day was gray, the color of Europe.”
—The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

This one line sets the tone, setting, and theme of the book. What a fantastic accomplishment for a writer. It signifies the darkness that shrouds Europe, which was created by the darkness of man—Hitler. WWII and the dark haze of coercion and threat loomed over the people and annihilated millions.

We all have a darkness, not to the extent of murder, but one that can blanket those around us. It’s important we find our light and keep it burning. Through social media, media, politics, and world events, showing our light instead of our darkness is what will help this world. There are many important topics we should want to change, such as climate change and healthcare.

The one main question I often wonder is, how can we expect to care for the earth and our health, when we can’t even care for humanity?

Society creates darkness through anger, hatred, closed-mindedness, and racism. Why not begin by focusing on our own selves? Instead, we spew so much anger out in the ethereal web without thinking about how it’s mixing with all the other anger. We need to start worrying about ourselves. Our flaws. We need to focus on who we are and how we can be better. If each person did this, if each person worked on becoming a better person, if each person thought before posting such darkness, then we would start to see the light within and around us.

We can’t fix the outer issues without focusing first on the inner issues.

A Song – Love

“You made me a shadowboxer, baby
I wanna be ready for what you do
Well I’ve been swinging around me
‘Cause I don’t know when you’re gonna make your move”
—Shadowboxer by Fiona Apple

These lyrics are genius regarding the them of the song. Shadow boxing is when a boxer strategically moves around and throws punches in the air. It helps them prepare for fights by figuring out their opponents move and preparing for it.

The song is about temptation and its dangers. Falling in and out of love—she prepares for the temptation, unsure of when he’s going to make a move, trying to brace for the fall. But she knows he has power over her.

Love pulls us in deep, and we fall hard. It makes us crazy. Some of us even go as far as to prepare ourselves for heartbreak. Unfortunately, sometimes it’s inevitable. Love is an important aspect in life and we all need it. Love of a partner, love of a dog, and love of family and friends. Love keeps this roller coaster of life exciting. Ups and downs, we all suffer from them, and we all pick ourselves up.

A Painting – Nature

The Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog by Caspar David Friedrich

This picture is sublime—the jagged rocks, hovering of fog, and a lone man looking out at the beauty and the wildness of nature with a cane to hold him up. The mid-point of the painting, where the clouds meet at the man’s chest, along with the rugged rock the man stands on is so dramatic.

I’ve read how Caspar David Friedrich captured this scene by traveling to the Elbe Sandstone Mountains southeast of Dresden, Germany and sketching individual rocks and nature in detail. He put them all together to create an imaginative landscape. It’s amazing how he captured the very essence of nature’s beauty and power. Then he places the man in the middle as our eyes, our personal observer.

I love nature paintings and pictures. How can anyone not enjoy natural wonders?
