All “Goodreads” must come to an end

Happy New Year!

As an author, it’s difficult to build an audience. To find people willing to buy and read your book, from the hundreds published daily, and the slim chance that they’ll review it. It’s even harder when you’re an unknown multi-genre indie author. Goodreads is a reader/writers paradise. It is a great way to bring exposure to your book by participating in discussions and doing giveaway promotions.

Most independent writers have a budget when producing a book. I’m on a tight one, so I choose to put my money toward a proofreader and digital graphics designer. Since I live in a small town in Germany, I’m limited with in-person promotions, so I count on Goodreads to build interest and reviews. I’ve done plenty of free Goodreads giveaways that generated thousands of readers shelving my books, and received several reviews from them.

By now, I’m sure many of you have already heard the news. In December, I received an email from Goodreads informing me of a change coming this January. Goodreads giveaways will no longer be free. Authors and publishers can choose between two packages, $119 and $599, which do not include much or the already existing shipping expenses. It’s unfortunate for many indie authors, especially since Amazon is removing legit reviews.

May this year open more doors for indie authors, and readers continue to share your favorite indie books.
